Dix Park in Ravenna, Ohio
The 103-acre park, donated to the Ravenna Township Park District by the Robert C. Dix family, is a diverse mix of forest, wetlands, and active farmland. There are springs throughout the park, and summer wildflowers bloom on the farmland. Despite its name, the park has no flushing toilets. Nonetheless, it’s one of the few local parks in Ravenna that has non-flushing toilets, making it an excellent option for families. See This Article!
Controlled burns help with land management
Prescribed fires have a lot of benefits for the environment, including protecting wildlife. In the past, fire suppression policies and land management practices have completely removed fire from the landscape, and that has resulted in the collapse of many natural habitats. As a result, many areas have become overgrown, with thick brush resulting in dangerous wildfires. Prescribed fires mimic the effects of natural, low-intensity fire and can protect wildlife habitats while saving money.
In addition to removing invasive species, controlled burns can also reduce the amount of woody stems. These fires can also propagate native herbaceous plants. Fire is necessary for prairie habitats to develop and function. Using fire to control the growth of vegetation will also allow the prairie to revert to its original state. The Portage Park District is conducting controlled burns at two sites this year: Dix Park in Ravenna Township and Morgan Park in Shalersville. Check Out This Info!
Prescribed fires are beneficial for restoring prairies by inhibiting invasive species and stimulating new growth of native plants. Each year, prairie plants send new growth to the ground. As a result, a thick layer of thatch develops, blocking the movement of animals and blanketing the ground with new seeds. To prevent the development of this layer, prescribed fires are set against the wind, called “backfires,” and have a short flame height.
Recreational activities
There are a variety of parks and recreation activities in the Ravenna area. Three of these parks have shelters, and the Ravenna Athletic Center is a state-of-the-art, 7,500-square-foot facility with free weights, fitness machines, and group fitness classes. In the summer, you can catch a wildflower show at the farmland and enjoy a picnic on the park’s greenspaces.
The Portage Hike & Bike Trail is a multijurisdictional project that stretches 12 miles from Kent to Ravenna. This trail follows Camp Creek and flows through the City of Ravenna. The Portage Hike & Bike Trail also serves as a connecting east-west trail in Northeast Ohio. In addition to bike trails, Portage Park District and Ravenna Townships developed Tinkers Creek State Nature Preserve.
