There are also nature journaling workshops that can help you start your new hobby. The West Woods Nature Center, located at 9465 Kinsman Road in Russell Township, will introduce participants to nature journaling. The sessions will focus on winter waters and vernal pools, as well as the creatures that use them. Nature journaling sessions are led by Renell Roebuck, who first took up the hobby four years ago.
The park is also home to Bass Lake, which is 160 acres of a beautiful natural resource. Nearby, the State Nature Preserve, Spring Brook Sanctuary, is home to the last known population of brook trout. A well-maintained playground and horseshoe pits provide plenty of family fun. If you’re interested in bird watching, there’s a 2.7-mile trail that allows you to observe the local wildlife.
Griswold Creek
A walk on Geauga Park District Cedar Road takes you along Griswold Creek, one of many hiking trails. This nature preserve is part of the Geauga Park District, which is part of the Ohio Metroparks system. The Geauga Park District manages a network of nature preserves throughout the county. While you’re walking along Cedar Road, you may notice some small wildlife.
The stream flows through the Bessie Benner Metzenbaum Park in Chester Township and is part of a coldwater tributary of the Chagrin River. Increasing storm water runoff has degraded the stream corridor, resulting in siltation and bank erosion. The loss of a floodplain connection along the creek has also contributed to the erosion of the streambed. The goal of Pira’s project is to correct erosion issues along about 1,300 feet of Griswold Creek and enhance its instream habitat. The project aims to control invasive species and install native plants.
The geauga Park District is home to the largest wildlife habitat in the city. There are beavers living in the wetlands surrounding the creek, which provide habitat for many birds. During springtime, the creek features a variety of species of songbirds. Throughout the property, visitors can enjoy a boardwalk over the creek.
